How to set up OSX 10.4 to print to a "Win Printer"
This document describes how to set up OSX 10.4 to print to an HP Deskjet
720C shared from Windows XP SP2.
First get the packages you will need:
- espgs-7.07.1.ppc.dmg 5.8M
- foomatic-rip-3.43.2.15.ppc.dmg 88k
- pnm2ppa-foomatic-1-1.12-2.ppc.dmg 263k
After installing the egsp and pp* packages in that order, and then
rebooting OSX, I was able to define the printer as follows:
- Go into System Preferences
- Go into Printers and Faxes
- Click on "+" while pressing the Option key.
- In the "Printer Browser" window, select "Default Printer".
- Then click on "More Printers".
- Then select "Windows Printer" and "Workgroup".
- The hostname of my OSX box appears: select it and then click on
"Choose".
- Sign in using the username and password combination for Windows XP as I
use on the Mac, and check "Remember this password on my keychain".
- The share name for the printer appears, e.g. "HPGJ720C".
- Select this and then select the printer model as "HP Deskjet 720C
Foomatic/pnm2ppa".
- Click on "Add".
- The printer now appears in "Printer List" as "HPDJ720C".
- If you "show info" for the printer, then this appears:
- Printer name "HPDJ720C"
- Location "Mshome" (the default name of the Windows workgroup with XP,
"Workgroup" with Vista)
- Queue name is the name of the printer ("HPDJ720C").
- Host name "mona/local" where this is the Bonjour name of the OSX
computer
- Driver version is 10.4.
